It was discovered that the gunmen, who were allegedly affiliated with the Eastern Security Network and the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, tossed explosives at the patrol car and opened fire on the officers near the former Gariki Road Imo.

Multiple injuries were reported to have been sustained by four additional police officers throughout the event.

“The officers were ambushed in the early hours of today, March 23, 2024, while on patrol duties along old Gariki Road, Okigwe, by the disgruntled elements who threw dynamite on the officer’s patrol vehicle and engaged them in a protracted gunfight,” stated police spokesman Henry Okoye, who confirmed the incident.

“Four officers survived the attack, but two officers paid the ultimate price in the process.”

According to Okoye, Aboki Danjuma, the Commissioner of Police, denounced the attack. He also stated that personnel from the Special Tactical Unit of the command were promptly taken to the crime site for an on-the-spot inspection by the commissioner and the Commander, MOPOL 18 and 64.
